The Northern Family Business Conference 2018-03-21T10:22:25+00:00

23 May 2018, Bowcliffe Hall, Bramham, Wetherby, LS23 6LP

The Northern Family Business Conference brings together owners and leaders of the most exciting, innovative and family-owned companies in the North of the UK. From cider makers and garden centres to food producers and manufacturers, the North is rich in proud, independent businesses. However, no matter the industry, we know that being in business with your family always brings its own unique challenges and difficulties.

This year’s Conference is a celebration of the wonderful and innovative family businesses who produce and sell food and drink products. From families who have been farming for generations, to biscuit bakers and cheese producers, cider makers, artisan startups and everything in between.

Whether you’re a fellow foodie, a tech start-up, or a fifth-generation manufacturer, there’s no telling what morsels you’ll take from our incredible line-up of inspiring guest speakers. Having navigated their way through an industry as complex as the food and drink industry, they really know all the right ingredients for growing a successful family business- and want to share their knowledge with you.

Our line-up of speakers

Jonathan was the third generation of his Swiss-Yorkshire family to lead the Bettys & Taylors of Harrogate business, which is now chaired by his wife, Lesley.

Nearly 100 years since it was founded, Bettys & Taylors is a vibrant and thriving family business with six Bettys Café Tea Rooms, a Craft Bakery, a Cookery School, online shop and one of the country’s most respected tea and coffee merchants, Taylors of Harrogate which produces Yorkshire Tea.

After 35 years in the business, Jonathan remains well-connected with family businesses throughout the north, and works with small groups of NextGeners on their unique challenges.

Maggie and her partner Jenny are the founders of their family business Patchwork Pate, which started in their kitchen back in 1982. Mags has been recognised for her business skills as Welsh Woman Small Business Owner of the year, Welsh Employer of the year and was given a lifetime achievement award by the Guild of Fine Food Retailers. Considered a ‘pâté alchemist’ Jen’s recipes have won numerous awards including a highly sought after Golden Fork.

A self-confessed ‘calculated risk taker’ Jonathan bought the Bayford business from his family over 12 years ago. The business has been transformed through acquisitions, disposals, new start-ups and more recently, European expansion. An inspirational leader, a wicked sense of humour, an outspoken and passionate Yorkshireman and winner of numerous business awards.

Judy founded her own business, Shepherds Purse Cheese in 1988 realising that more and more people were becoming intolerant to dairy products. She hit on the idea of making cheese from ewes’ milk and now her two daughters run their award-winning family business which employs more than 20 people and is stocked in supermarkets around the country.
