Family Business Place is 10 years old. That’s 10 years in business, 10 years of building connections, 10 years of bringing together family firms, 10 years of supporting entrepreneurial families through thick and thin.

To celebrate, we’re embarking on 10 brand new, brilliant activities. How will you get involved?

1. P.A.R.T.Y

First things first. It wouldn’t be a birthday without a good ol’ knees up. After 10 years of working tirelessly to build an incredible family business community around the UK, it’s only right that we should celebrate. So we’re taking over The Big Cat Sanctuary in our home county of Kent on 7 August and popping the fizz with our friends, family and many of the wonderful connections we’ve made along the way. Keep your eyes peeled for an invitation.

2. Fundraising for great causes

We’ve always been passionate about giving back and over the years have raised tens of thousands of pounds for charity. This year is no different. In fact we’re focusing on it more than ever before. To kick things off, our Chairman (and intrepid explorer) Anita Brightley-Hodges will be trekking a whopping 130km along the Camino de Santiago in northern Spain. She’ll be raising money for Alzheimer’s Research as she is experiencing first hand the devastating effect of Dementia on her mother.

You heard it here first. We’re making family businesses famous. We’ll be touring the country to find out the stories behind Britain’s most-loved family firms. In a world where video has fast-become the most-watched form of media, we’ll be interviewing and filming business small and large, north and south to give them amazing publicity across our digital channels. If you’re a family business we’ll be in touch very soon. Nobody is safe!

4. Family Business Showcase

We’re showcasing family business in all their glory. From cider makers in the West Country to bespoke tailors in London. From chip shops in Birmingham, to manufacturers in Cornwall. We’re on the hunt for Britain and Ireland’s hidden gems. As part of the showcase, you’ll get your very own profile page which we’ll then use to promote you to our thousands of online fans and the wider business community. It’s completely free to join (who doesn’t love a freebie?)

5. Launch of the Great Family Business Run

Run families, run! In partnership with a national running organisation, we’re helping family businesses to get moving. On one special Saturday (date tbc) we’re encouraging everyone who works in a family business to join their local 5km run. From Lincoln to London, Cardiff to Canterbury – wherever you are in the country it’s time to dust off your trainers and walk, jog or sprint to the finish line. What an incredible way for families all over the country to come together and do something amazing.

6. Celebrating our 30th borehole well

Since we launched the WellGood Campaign 5 years ago, our community of family businesses have sponsored an incredible 30 borehole wells in Uganda. Working with a brilliant charity called Fields of Life, we’ve been to Uganda and seen first hand what a life-changing impact these wells have on their communities. 30 wells is a phenomenal number, but it’s not enough. We want EVERY family business to sponsor their very own well.

7. Next generation trip to China

As a second generation business ourselves, we’ve always been incredibly passionate about supporting the next generation of family business leaders. Which is why we’ve teamed up with China’s most renowned business school, CKGSB, to take a group of next gen on a trip of a lifetime to China. You’ll meet your chinese counterparts, visit four provinces and meet captains of industry in China. Think of it as an invaluable ‘business bootcamp’ where you’ll experience exactly how the world’s most industrious country does things.

8. Specialist advice for family firms

Our Chairman, Anita Brightley-Hodges, has been studying with the Family Firm Institute in USA and now holds a Certificate in Family Business Advising. This, coupled with her 20 years experience helping independent businesses through their most challenging times, means Anita has a unique and invaluable set of skills to support family firms. This year, we have launched a brand new website specifically for companies who need Anita’s help and advice. Check it out HERE

9. 10th Anniversary edition of Generation

For the past 10 years we’ve published Generation – the UK’s most exceptional coffee-table magazine dedicated to showcasing British family businesses. We’ve travelled the length and breadth of the country meeting the entrepreneurial families behind some of Britain’s most-loved names as well as uncovering hidden gems. This year we’re putting together a bumper issue jam-packed with news, features and articles from leading experts. Watch this space!

10. Our BIGGEST Awards to date

When we first ran a little awards ceremony 10 years ago to celebrate family businesses, we could never have envisaged what a huge, national success it would become. Last year The National Family Business Awards welcomed 400 people from all over the country to London’s iconic Wembley Stadium as we recognised the very finest family firms the UK & Ireland has to offer. This year, the Awards are set to be bigger and better than ever and we’re set for a spectacular night, not to be missed.
